Thriving Through Menopause: A Guided Journey
Support your body, restore your energy, and step confidently into your best chapter yet!

Did you get hit by the Menopause BOMB! I did and it was decidedly not pretty, who would have thought that changing hormones could create such chaos with your energy, mood and health

I am immensely grateful that as a Naturopath I have access to the knowledge and support that Nature wonderfully provides for us at this challenging time in our lives. I often say that Nature loves women, there is such a beautiful array of herbs which can support and nurture our bodies.

Understanding the roles of stress, diet, lifestyle choices and sleep are key to getting back in the driver’s seat. This knowledge can significantly change the menopause journey, so that instead of being shaken about by the disruption which can feel horribly overwhelming
and leave us wondering what happened to us, we can feel empowered in moving through this transition.

I like to think of this transition as an opportunity to move into a new phase and stage, a time of new beginnings and dreams. Forget survival, this can be a time to recalibrate and build up strength to discover your best future self. In a strange way, I think that the menopause transition gives us the opportunity to take stock and make new plans, new ways of thinking and acting so that we can finish strong.

I can’t promise you plain sailing every day, however I can support you and help you find your best way to power through the menopause transition and come out on the other side ready to move forward as you take on the next chapter of your life.

The question of the Menopausal transition…
Menopause covers a wide range of stages, hence my referral to the menopausal transition.
Technically perimenopause is the start of this transition and can begin as early as your mid-thirties and will last from four to 10 years (excluding primary ovarian insufficiency). For each woman it is different, some will slowly work their way in, while for others it can be a very marked change.

The beginning of perimenopause has symptoms which can be attributed to being busy and stressed such as being tired, sleeping badly, feeling irritable and grumpy, feeling overwhelmed, brain fog, menstrual cycle changes and weight gain for example. This is the time ideally when we really want to be looking after ourselves, as our bodies are changing due to the hormonal shifts which later will impact on our brain, heart, metabolism, bones and muscles to name a few.

Moving nearer to menopause itself, many symptoms may become more pronounced which can include a long list including both physical and emotional symptoms, it can be common to wonder what happened to you, may women will say that they just don’t feel like themselves anymore. It is good to know that you are not alone and that it isn’t something you simply have to endure.

Symptoms include
-
Hot flushes
-
brain fog, being forgetful, forgetting names and words
-
low energy to feeling utterly exhausted
-
Feeling anxious, sad, overwhelmed, depressed, panic attacks and as if there is no point to anything anymore, feeling that you are not of value, decreased self-confidence, a loss of interest in things that you use to love
-
Feeling angry, a zero on feeling patient, flaring up over small things, grumpy, irritable, mood swings – often unexpected or for no apparent reason, feeling on edge, restless
-
Difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night, waking tired and unrefreshed
-
Breast pain, swollen breasts, heavy bleeding, fibroids
-
Weight gain, difficulty shifting your weight (the old strategies are no longer effective)
-
Your skins looks saggy and your face gets more lines which may come and go
-
Prior health issues may flare up, or you may develop new health issues
-
Muscle aches and joint pain
-
Vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, urine leakage
-
Bloating, weight gain, dry eyes, dry skin, thinning hair, brittle nails, itchy ears/skin, low libido
As you move closer to Menopause (no period for 12 months), menstruation will become erratic in presentation and timing, being lighter one month and heavier and longer another, with skipped periods in-between or closer together. Heart palpitations may show up more regularly at this point and migraines prior to your period.

Menopause on average is reached at 51 years old, however this is variable on either side for many women. Your symptoms don’t unfortunately disappear once the milestone of no periods for 12 months has been reached, they may continue, however often will less intensity or may shift. This stage does bring the need for a new approach to your health and wellbeing. Yes certain risks with regards to your health increase, however knowledge is power when it comes to making changes, so that your future is a healthy and positive place.

The good news is that you are not crazy and it’s your hormones shifting which are creating all those symptoms and there is a lot you can do to support yourself.

The other side of Menopause - your best Chapter yet!

This is a pivotal point for your health as your body has changed how it works. It is important to understand that you need to be looking after your health in a new way to negate the health risks which this stage brings and to ensure that you age healthily and strongly. The good news is that aging well is indeed possible and not difficult when you understand what care your body needs. I think that this is an exciting period as you begin a new, exciting and meaningful chapter of your life.

So, what is the PLAN you may ask

One of my favorite things about being a Naturopath is that I get to work out an individual plan for each of my clients. This means that I will spend time with you to work out where you are at in your health and investigate factors which are affecting your health. We will then work out the best plan forward for YOU, so that this menopausal transition will be a positive and empowering journey ensuring that you have the support and resources you need .

Your plan will involve working on your symptoms – they are a genuine challenge which need addressing.
We will work together on your diet, lifestyle choices and factors to support your menopausal journey so that the factors which are negatively impacting you are reduced, removed or managed and that factors which will be beneficial are layered into your plan, enabling you to move forward confidently.
Your plan is designed to be attainable, moving and adapting with you, setting you up for success, not just through the menopausal transition, also moving forward into your future health and wellbeing.
