What are the principles of Naturopathic Medicine?

1. The Healing Power of Nature - Vis Medicatrix Naturae
This is the belief that in nature is an ordered and intelligent system which has an inherent ability to bring healing and order. As Naturopaths we believe our role is to support and facilitate this process.

2. First Do No Harm - Primum Non Nocere
This is followed according to three precepts which avoid bringing harm to the patient.
a. Naturopathic methods are selected to minimize the risk of any harmful effects, selecting the lowest level of intervention to support diagnosis, treat the illness and restore health.
b. Symptom suppression is generally avoided due to the understanding that this may ultimately interfere with the healing process.
c. Working with the healing power of nature is central to diagnosis and treatment as disrespecting this principle may result in patient harm

3. Treat the Whole Person - Tolle Totum
The diseased and healthy state are understood to be as a result of biopsychosocial factors and as such treating only one aspect of the client will not lead to a comprehensive treatment.

4. Treat the Cause - Tolle Causam
Disease and illness have a cause and as such until the cause and disturbing factors feeding into the cause are addressed, creating conditions for healing are restricted and can prevent resolution.

5. Doctor as Teacher- Docere
Supporting understanding and knowledge while emphasizing self-responsibility, support successful health outcomes, allowing the patient to take control of their health journey in partnership with their Naturopath.

6. Prevention - Preventare
Through the adoption of healthy lifestyle and dietary changes, along with clients understanding their predispositions to health, allows the patient to look to a healthier future. Understanding the landscape for health and wellbeing allows for prevention of future illness and disease development.
